Mathilda

I am a graduate in Classics and will hopefully be returning next study for a Master’s degree in the same discipline! I’ve tutored steadily throughout university, typically in London and in residential settings. My specialisms are 7+, 8+ 11+ test prep and I also have ample experience at GCSE level. I currently work as a full-time tutor in a secondary school, teaching English and Maths GCSE to pupils of all different abilities; encountering such a variety of learning styles has led me to broaden and refine my teaching capabilities. In this role, I have also gained experience teaching EAL (English as an Additional Language) students, which has similarly expanded the way I think about teaching and communication.

How I tutor

I work hard to make my lessons thorough and engaging. Thorough, in the sense that I always work from the ground up, ensuring that my students understand the fundamental principles of a topic before approaching composite problems. Engaging, in the sense that I make my lessons extremely varied so as to harness my students’ attention. By alternating between teaching and practice, and different modes of activity (e.g. verbal discussion, visual aids, creative exercise) I ensure that tuition is perceived as an exciting opportunity, never a burden.

Why I tutor

I receive immense satisfaction and joy from witnessing my students overcome their academic obstacles, whatever they are. The ability to appreciate genuine change in a student’s ability, whether that is my own appreciation, that of the student, or parent, is a phenomenon specific to teaching, and to my mind this makes tuition the most rewarding occupation.

Qualifications

A-levels

  • A* English Literature, A* Latin, A Philosophy, A Maths (AS Level).

GCSE

  • 8 A*, 2 A.

Experience

I have successfully tutored students who gained entry to top London schools at 7+, including Wetherby Prep and Colet Court, and at 11+ to Latymer Upper and Godolphin and Latymer. At GCSE Level, I have helped secure A* grades for high-achieving pupils in Latin, Greek and English. I also have had much success helping numerous students with more general goals. The brilliance of tutoring – the personalised approach it allows – is the deep knowledge a tutor can have of a student’s relationship with a subject. Through observation and keeping record, I am able to create a structured plan targeted at specific problem areas.
