Tilda

I am an English tutor with five years of experience. I have a first-class English Language and Literature degree and balanced my academic studies with working on student publications. I edited the books and visual arts section of a newspaper and the non-fiction section of a magazine. I’m passionate about visual arts, literary fiction and long-form journalism. I specialise in English but I have broad experience in other subject areas also.

How I tutor

I always start by having a conversation with the parent and tutee, in order to work out how best to use our time together and make concrete goals.

I plan lessons thoroughly, breaking the time into chunks. I aim to strike a balance between teaching topics and setting short tasks to test understanding. I make each lesson as interactive as possible, and never assume knowledge, always checking with the tutee to make sure they have grasped concepts.

I always respond to the unique needs of tutees, creating tailored lesson plans and monitoring progress carefully. My teaching style is firm but calm and fun.

Why I tutor

I have benefitted from a fantastic education, and enjoy using the skills I have developed to help tutees to thrive academically. I find watching a tutee grasp a new concept or develop a new understanding very rewarding.

Experience

I have taught English to students aged 7- 19. One 10-year-old student had recently moved to England from China and had fairly basic speaking and reading skills. I worked with him until his English was fluent and his writing had dramatically improved, so I have experience teaching English as a foreign language.

At the other end of the age range, I’ve taught students for A level English and Oxbridge entrance. Currently, I am working with an Oxbridge English applicant. Together we worked on his Personal Statement and ELAT test, and we are now doing interview prep. I am also currently teaching a close reading course to a group of six eleven-year-old Chinese students. We meet once a week via Zoom, and I have enjoyed learning how to hold the attention of a group.

Testimonials

‘Tilda tutored my twin boys for two years, from the ages of 11 to 13. She prepared them for their common entrance exams, and both ended up getting academic scholarships to their chosen schools. Tilda managed to balance the boy’s different needs, and both now read a lot more than they used to. She was always polite and arrived on time. I absolutely recommend Tilda as a tutor.’

Max and Otis- 11+ English, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

‘Tilda was an enormous help. Her friendliness and careful teaching made even the most difficult areas accessible. Over the time she taught me, my confidence increased a lot, and I felt ready for my interview.’

Ivo, Oxford English entrance.
